When to visit Zion
Spring (March to May) and fall (late September to November) are the sweet spots. Summer highs push past 100 degrees and the Narrows can close for flash flood risk during monsoon season, usually July to September. Winter is quiet and cold at night, but most trails stay open.
The Zion Canyon shuttle
Zion Canyon Scenic Drive is closed to private cars for most of the year, so you ride the free park shuttle from the visitor center. Springdale runs its own free shuttle through town to the park entrance, which saves you fighting for parking.
Best hikes in Zion
Angels Landing needs a permit from the park lottery. The Narrows (bottom-up) needs no permit but does need water shoes and a clear forecast. For easier options try Riverside Walk, Pa'rus Trail, Emerald Pools and Canyon Overlook on the east side.

Kolob Canyons, off I-15 north of St. George, has a scenic drive with almost no crowds. Kolob Terrace Road leads to the Subway and Lava Point. Sand Hollow and Quail Creek reservoirs are close by for water days.
